The Sacred Trek to Anjaneri Fort: Birthplace of Lord Hanuman

Nestled in the mountainous terrain of the Western Ghats near Nashik lies the historic Anjaneri Fort, an ancient citadel steeped in Hindu mythology and trekking lore. Anjaneri is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman, the mighty monkey god and devotee of Lord Rama in the Hindu epic Ramayana.

The fort sits atop a 4,200 feet tall hill by the same name, surrounded by verdant forests and overlooking the Godavari basin. Along with its religious significance, Anjaneri Fort is also a popular trekking destination near Nashik and Trimbakeshwar that offers stunning views and a moderately challenging climb.

The Legend of Anjaneri Hill

According to Hindu legends, Anjaneri Hill is where Anjana, the mother of Hanuman, performed intense austerities for over 7,000 years to beget an illustrious son. Pleased by her unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before her and granted her wish for a son with divinely endowed skills and strength. This fulfills Anjana's boon that Hanuman would assist Lord Rama in his quest to defeat the demon King Ravana, as told in the Ramayana epic.

Anjaneri Hill

The hill came to be known as Anjaneri after Anjana, and a temple dedicated to Anjani Mata (Mother Anjana) stands at the summit today. There is also a shrine with idols of infant Hanuman and his mother. Several caves existed where sages of yore performed intense meditation.

The Mesmerizing Anjaneri Fort Trek

The trail starts with a stone-paved path followed by boulder hopping across a dried stream. In 15 minutes, you arrive at an ancient Jain cave dating back to the 11th-12th century. Spend some time exploring this offbeat site before continuing further.

The path then winds through thick forests with tall trees and green shrubs. Tiny rivulets crisscross the trail which can get slippery during monsoons due to moss on rocks. After climbing steadily for 30 minutes, you arrive at a sunny meadow blooming with wildflowers.

10 minutes later, you arrive at the sacred Anjani Mata temple located amidst the meadows. Soak in the spiritual ambiance and admire the architecture of this shrine. After paying obeisance, continue further through the long meadows to admire the landscape from various vantage points.

The dense tree cover starts again, and you need to traverse a slippery section aided by ropes strung across trees. Numerous langur monkeys dwell in this part of the forest. After 20 minutes of steady climb, you emerge atop a rocky perch. Replenish yourself with snacks and fluids here before starting the final lap.

Marveling at the Summit

A 10-minute balanced walk across boulders brings you to the Anjaneri Fort summit. Also located here is a shrine dedicated to infant Hanuman. Marvel at the breathtaking 360-degree views of surrounding lush valleys, hills, and Godavari basin from this vantage point.

You can also spot another footprint-shaped lake right below that disappears into the thick forests. On clear days, sights like Brahmagiri hill and peaks near Trimbakeshwar are visible along with Nasik city in the distance.

After spending ample time soaking in the panoramas and exploring the various attractions at the hilltop, retrace your steps back to the base village. Stop for lunch at local eateries before heading back.
