Reaching Kalavantin Durg - My Trekking Experience

I still remember the exhilaration I felt when I finally reached the top of Kalavantin Durg after a challenging 2-hour trek. Nestled between Prabalgad and Matheran in the Western Ghats range, this ancient fort stands at an altitude of 2,300 feet, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

As an avid trekker who enjoys conquering tough terrains, I decided to share my experience to guide fellow hiking enthusiasts on how to successfully complete this trek.

how to reach kalavantin durg

Overview

Duration: 2 hours one way

Difficulty Level: Medium to Difficult

Trekk Distance: ~2.5 km one way

Route: Village Thakurwadi -> Kalavantin Durg

Best Time to Visit: June to February

Things to Carry: Sturdy shoes, hat/cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, torch, snacks, and at least 3 liters of water.

Reaching the Base Village

The journey starts from Thakurwadi village, the base point to commence the Kalavantin Durg trek. To get here, you first need to reach the hill station Panvel which is well connected by road and rail route from Mumbai and Pune. From Panvel, take a vehicle to reach the base village located 20 km away.

The road is scenic but quite bumpy and narrow at some stretches. Have a hearty meal before you begin because Thakurwadi offers limited food options. Use the washrooms here since there are none uphill. Remember to carry enough water and snacks.

The Thrilling Trek Uphill

From Thakurwadi, spot the arrow markings on the rocks that chart the trekking route uphill.

The initial 15-20 minutes involve a simple incline through thick bushes and trees. Stop here briefly to energize yourself for the tougher climb later.

Tip: Apply sunscreen generously during this break.

As you resume the trek, it starts getting steeper with rocky and undefined trails. There are arrows to guide but be alert about the path ahead. Use the strong roots of trees and rocks to pull yourself upwards. I took several tiny breaks to catch my breath in between.

In just 30-40 minutes, you enter the finale - the inclination is 70-80 degrees with metal ladders placed adventurously alongside the stone walls. My advice - do NOT look down during this stretch, just concentrate on each step above. Take assistance if you feel uncomfortable at any point.

And voila, in the next 20-30 minutes, with a few scratches and a lot of sweat, I climbed the towering cliff without giving up! Such an incredible feeling of achievement and pride to conquer this thrilling trek.

At the Spectacular Summit

Catch your breath and rejoice in the sweeping vistas that await you at the top. You can cover the entire fort within 30-45 minutes - take delight in exploring the oldest sentry points, stone architecture, and tracings of the past.

Do not miss the cliff's edge that gives a majestic bird's eye view of the surrounding Western Ghat ranges, green villages, and snaking roads. It is both beautiful and scary at the same time. I recommend carrying a light snack to enjoy atop the windswept cliffs but do not litter or leave any trash behind.

Since it is an isolated hill, there are no food stalls or shops uphill. Use the washrooms before beginning the descent.

Descending Safely

Give your body some rest after all that climbing. Have some snacks or fruits to regain energy. Always follow the same route while coming down to avoid getting lost or injured. Concentrate on each step and use support wherever necessary.

I took almost 90 mins to descend carefully using the ladders. Remember, it rains here frequently so the rocks can get slippery. Thus tread slowly and avoid running or jumping. Soon you will be at the base village again - exhausted but overwhelmingly proud of conquering Kalavantin Durg!
