The highlight in Mahabaleshwar is getting out amongst the famous strawberry fields and orchards. Nothing beats sampling fresh fruit straight from the lush farms. If adventure is what you want, there are great options for hiking, rappelling, boating, and mountain biking too. I'd recommend exploring the nature trails like Lord Point and Castle Rock. You can't miss out on seeing majestic Elephant Head Point either.
Matheran, on the other hand, prides itself on preserving its peaceful, eco-friendly ambience. Activities here mostly revolve around appreciating nature - you won't find noisy adventure sports dominating the landscape. Going on long walks through the shady woods, stopping to set up a picnic at Echo Point or Charlotte Lake along the way, makes for a rejuvenating day. Take the heritage train ride along the edge of the mountain for amazing valley views too.

Accommodation
You'll be spoiled for hotel choices in both destinations. But Matheran stands out when it comes to charm.
Staying in the iconic heritage hotels and Parsi bungalows dotting Matheran adds a lovely old-world vibe to your trip. Waking up to the sunrise filtering through the tall trees surrounding these cottages and country homes makes you feel far away from the bustle of India's cities. You just don't find options this quaint and cosy in many other hill stations.
Mahabaleshwar offers more variety in hotel choices - from plush resorts to cozy villas to economical lodges. So it's easier to find something in your budget. Being a larger town, the accommodation choices and tourist infrastructure are more developed. But much of it feels newer and busier than Matheran's quainter options.

Accessibility
For sheer ease of access for vacationers, Mahabaleshwar has better transport connectivity hands down. It's just a 5-6 hour drive from Mumbai and Pune, with well-maintained roads leading right up to the hill station. You'll find buses and shared taxis at regular intervals making it hassle-free even if you don't have your own vehicle.
Matheran is a little more remote at 90km from Mumbai. Getting there requires a bit more planning and effort. Your options are essentially to catch a local train to Neral Junction, from where you need to get to Matheran in a taxi or aboard the scenic heritage railway. The trains don't run daily so you need to time your connections right. There are no roads allowing private vehicles within the eco-sensitive hill station either. But the extra journey is worth it for the peaceful environs.

Shopping and Dining
Matheran's inaccessibility by road does dampen its dining and shopping scene quite a bit compared to Mahabaleshwar's thriving marketplaces.
In Matheran, you'll mostly find humble local eateries and simple shops selling snacks and souvenirs. So it's not a place for an expansive foodie experience. You go for the soul-soothing tranquility more than creature comforts.
Mahabaleshwar dazzles with charming local bazaars, numerous restaurants dishing out strawberry delicacies, and buzzing shops packed with jams, local honey and handmade chocolates to take home. You'll find cuisines ranging from street food snacks to lavish multi-cuisine meals at hotels. Shops sport an impressive variety of dried fruits, spices and handicrafts too.
Verdict: Mahabaleshwar for an indulgent shopping and dining bonanza - Matheran for appreciating simplicity.
