In this article, we'll guide you through the various ways to reach Gangtok, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey. Whether you prefer to travel by air, rail, or road, we've got you covered with practical information and helpful tips.

So, grab your travel essentials, and let's explore the best ways to reach this breathtaking destination.

How to Reach Gangtok

Reach Gangtok by Air

One of the most convenient ways to reach Gangtok is by air. The nearest airport is the Bagdogra International Airport, located approximately 124 kilometers (77 miles) from Gangtok.

From Bagdogra, you can hire a taxi or take a shared vehicle to Gangtok. The journey typically takes around 4-5 hours, depending on traffic conditions and the mode of transportation.

It's important to note that there are no direct flights to Bagdogra from major cities like Delhi or Mumbai. You'll need to take a connecting flight from one of the metropolitan cities.

Additionally, during the peak tourist season, it's advisable to book your flights well in advance to ensure availability and reasonable prices.

Reach Gangtok by Rail

If you prefer to travel by train, the nearest major railway station is the New Jalpaiguri Junction (NJP), which is approximately 125 kilometers (78 miles) from Gangtok. From NJP, you can hire a taxi or take a shared vehicle to reach your destination.

The journey by road usually takes around 4-5 hours, similar to the travel time from Bagdogra Airport.

It's worth mentioning that there are no direct trains to NJP from most major cities in India. You'll need to take a connecting train or make a stopover at a major junction before reaching NJP.

Additionally, during peak tourist seasons, it's recommended to book your train tickets well in advance to secure your desired seats.

Reach Gangtok by Road

For those who enjoy scenic road trips, driving to Gangtok can be an excellent option. The town is well-connected by road to major cities in the neighboring states of West Bengal and Assam.

If you're coming from Kolkata, the journey takes approximately 10-12 hours, covering a distance of around 700 kilometers (435 miles).

From Siliguri, which is a major city in West Bengal, the drive to Gangtok takes around 4-5 hours, covering a distance of approximately 114 kilometers (71 miles). This route is particularly popular among travelers as it offers stunning views of the Himalayan ranges and lush green landscapes.

If you're coming from Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, the journey to Gangtok takes around 8-9 hours, covering a distance of approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles).

Conclusion

Gangtok, the captivating capital of Sikkim, beckons travelers with its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Whether you choose to travel by air, rail, or road, each option offers its own unique experiences and challenges.

Totally agree, the drive from NJP/Bagdogra to Gangtok is half the fun with those Teesta river views, We always just book the whole transfer + Sikkim trip together so there’s no hassle at the airport or station. Did it last year with North Bengal Tourism and the car was waiting the second we landed, super smooth all the way: https://northbengaltourism.com/sikkim-tour-packages/ saves so much time and stress, especially with luggage and kids! Great guide btw.
